The Hutong is one of the older parts of Beijing and is the place where people who served the emperor lived. The streets are narrow with high walls all along. The walls are punctuated with massive doors which enter into a courtyard where one to four families live. China is attempting to preserve these houses and many have been recently restored. Unfortunately, many are so far gone they can probably never be restored.
